Schaufensterscheibe eines geschlossenen Ladens

Synopsis

With its image axis repeatedly tilting and tipping out of frame, DEPTH OF FIELD examines three places in the German city of Nuremberg haunted by and struggling against the memory of racist murders committed there by the far-right terrorist group NSU between 2000 and 2005.

The off-screen commentary describes everyday scenes and encounters at the crime scenes on different time levels and interweaves them with condensed fragments of knowledge about the NSU's deeds and the parallel world of murder investigations, which until the NSU's self-disclosure in 2011 was directed exclusively against the murder victims and their families.
The pen becomes a camera, the camera becomes an actor and at the same time a contemporary witness. The filmed crime scenes become points of view on a city whose axis repeatedly tilts out of the frame. In this way, levels of reality are sounded out, irritated and shifted, tracing the shocks of these seemingly unscandalisable attacks by the NSU on the reality of (post-)migrant society.
